I run a one-person studio out of Lithuania — a Hugo blog on Cloudflare Pages, three scrapers on the Apify Store, a couple of MCP servers. Total monthly software spend is under $30, most of that the domain. Everything below is what I actually use or what I’d swap to if my current tool tripled in price tomorrow.

47 free tools across 12 categories, with the paid software each replaces and the annual savings. Most are AI tools; a handful are AI-adjacent free software I’d never run a business without — Photopea, the Hemingway Editor, Pandas, Vercel, Slack — so the list is honestly “free tools,” not strictly “free AI.” Every one has a usable free tier, not a 7-day trial. For the broader pattern these fit into, see 10 business tasks to automate with AI.

Every price below is a May 2026 snapshot from the vendor’s own pricing page. SaaS pricing drifts — verify before you switch.

Writing and Content Creation

1. ChatGPT (Free tier)

Replaces: Jasper (Creator, $39/mo annual / $49 list), Copy.ai ($49/month)
Savings: ~$468–$1,176/year

Capable GPT-5-class access with generous usage limits. The quality gap between free ChatGPT and paid content tools has essentially closed in 2026.

Best for: Blog drafts, email writing, brainstorming, product descriptions, social captions.

2. Claude (Free tier)

Replaces: Jasper (Creator, $39/mo annual / $49 list) for long-form content
Savings: ~$468–$588/year

The one I use for almost everything that lands on the blog. The free tier gets you Claude Sonnet, the context window swallows whole documents, and the long-form output reads less like marketing copy than anything else I’ve tried.

Best for: Long-form articles, document analysis, research synthesis, technical writing.

3. Google Gemini (Free)

Replaces: Perplexity Pro ($20/month) for research
Savings: $240/year

Gemini 2.5 Pro carries a 1-million-token context window and native multimodal capabilities. Strong for research — analyzes images, processes PDFs, synthesizes across sources. Chrome desktop users also get Google Chrome Skills — a free way to save any Gemini prompt as a reusable one-click command across open tabs.

Best for: Research, multimodal analysis, document processing, fact-checking.

4. Grammarly (Free tier)

Replaces: ProWritingAid ($10/month)
Savings: $120/year

Catches grammar, spelling, and punctuation. No advanced style suggestions, but for business writing the free tier handles 80% of what you need.

Best for: Final polish, email proofreading, catching errors.

5. Hemingway Editor (Free)

Replaces: Premium readability tools
Savings: $50–$100/year

Highlights complex sentences, passive voice, and readability issues. Paste in an AI draft, simplify what Hemingway flags, output reads like a human wrote it.

Best for: Editing AI-generated content, improving readability scores.

Design and Visual Content

6. Canva (Free tier)

Replaces: Adobe Creative Cloud ($55/month)
Savings: $660/year

Free tier includes Magic Design (AI layouts), Magic Write, and thousands of templates. More design capability than most small businesses need.

Best for: Social graphics, presentations, marketing materials, infographics, logos.

7. Microsoft Designer (Free)

Replaces: Canva Pro ($13/month) for AI image generation
Savings: $156/year

Built on DALL-E. Text-prompt to custom images, social posts, and marketing visuals. Particularly good for branded social content.

Best for: AI images, social visuals, marketing banners.

8. Photopea (Free)

Replaces: Adobe Photoshop ($21/month)
Savings: $252/year

A full Photoshop alternative in your browser. Supports PSD files, layers, masks, filters. Not AI itself, but pairs perfectly with AI-generated images that need manual refinement.

Best for: Photo editing, image manipulation, PSD files.

9. Remove.bg (Free tier)

Replaces: Manual Photoshop background removal
Savings: Hours per week

AI background removal in 5 seconds. Standard-resolution outputs on the free tier — fine for social and web.

Best for: Product photos, profile pictures, e-commerce listings.

10. Bing Image Creator (Free)

Replaces: Midjourney ($10/month), DALL-E credits
Savings: $120/year

DALL-E, free through Bing. Competitive with paid alternatives for most business use cases — blog headers, social images, conceptual illustrations.

Best for: Blog headers, social visuals, concept art.

Video and Audio

11. CapCut (Free)

Replaces: Adobe Premiere Pro ($23/month)
Savings: $276/year

AI video editing with auto-captions, background removal, audio enhancement, smart edit suggestions. Free tier is remarkably full-featured.

Best for: Video editing, auto-captioning, short-form content.

12. OpusClip (Free tier — 60 credit-minutes/month)

Replaces: Manual video repurposing (3–5 hours per long video)
Savings: 15–25 hours/month

Upload a long video, AI cuts the most engaging moments into vertical clips with captions, ready for Shorts/TikToks/Reels. The free tier runs on credits — one credit per minute of source footage, 60 a month — so a single hour-long podcast spends the whole budget. Exports carry a watermark. Half a day of editing still drops to a few minutes.

Best for: Repurposing podcasts, webinars, and long video into short-form.

13. Descript (Free tier)

Replaces: Adobe Audition ($23/month) + transcription services
Savings: $276/year + transcription costs

Edit audio and video by editing the transcript — delete a word from the text and it’s gone from the audio. Free tier includes transcription, basic editing, screen recording, and AI filler-word removal.

Best for: Podcast editing, video transcription, screen recordings.

14. ElevenLabs (Free tier)

Replaces: Professional voiceover artists ($100–$500 per project)
Savings: Thousands per year depending on volume

Natural-sounding voiceovers from text. Free tier is 10,000 characters/month — enough for short videos, demos, or podcast intros. Most listeners can’t tell it’s synthetic.

Best for: Video voiceovers, audiobook samples, podcast intros, product demos.

15. Riverside.fm (Free tier)

Replaces: Zoom ($14/month) + recording software
Savings: $168/year

High-quality podcast and video interviews with AI transcription, auto-chapters, and highlight detection. Records locally on each device, so quality doesn’t depend on internet.

Best for: Podcast recording, video interviews, remote content production.

SEO and Marketing

16. Google Search Console (Free)

Replaces: Basic features of Ahrefs (Lite, $129/mo monthly / $108 annual) and Semrush (Pro, $139.95/month)
Savings: ~$1,500–$3,200/year for the features it covers

Which keywords bring traffic, which pages are indexed, how the site performs in search. For the Hugo blog, this plus a weekly check of which posts AI engines cite is my entire SEO stack.

Best for: Keyword tracking, indexing status, search performance.

17. Ubersuggest (Free tier)

Replaces: Ahrefs (Lite, $129/mo monthly / $108 annual) for basic keyword research
Savings: Up to ~$1,500/year

Three free keyword searches per day — volume, difficulty, related keywords. Enough for a small business on weekly content planning. Pair with Search Console for more depth.

Best for: Keyword research, competitor domain analysis, content ideas.

18. Google Looker Studio (Free)

Replaces: Databox ($59/month), DashThis ($39/month)
Savings: $468–$708/year

Custom dashboards pulling from Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads, and dozens of other sources. AI insights highlight trends and anomalies. Most marketers don’t know it exists.

Best for: Marketing dashboards, automated reporting, data viz.

19. AnswerThePublic (Free tier)

Replaces: Part of BuzzSumo ($199/month)
Savings: Partial replacement, significant for ideation

Shows what questions people ask about any topic. Essential for AEO — structuring content around the exact questions AI engines surface.

Best for: Topic research, FAQ ideas, understanding search intent.

20. Yoast SEO (Free WordPress plugin)

Replaces: RankMath Pro ($59/year), Clearscope ($170/month)
Savings: $59–$2,040/year

On-page SEO, readability, XML sitemaps, meta tag management. Won’t write your strategy, but ensures every page you publish is technically sound.

Best for: On-page SEO, meta tags, readability scoring.

Customer Communication

21. Tidio (Free tier — 50 lifetime Lyro AI conversations)

Replaces: Intercom (Essential, $39/seat/mo), Zendesk ($19/agent/month)
Savings: $228–$468/year

Live chat free indefinitely; the Lyro AI agent gets a one-time grant of 50 conversations that does not renew. Once it’s spent, AI replies stop until you buy a Lyro add-on (from $39/month). So treat the AI as a trial and the live chat as the genuinely free part — it still answers product questions, captures leads, and routes complex issues to you.

Best for: Website chat, support automation, lead capture.

22. Crisp (Free tier)

Replaces: Basic Intercom (Essential, $39/seat/mo)
Savings: Hundreds per year

Live chat, chatbot, and shared inbox — free for 2 team members. AI-suggested responses, automatic language translation, clean interface that doesn’t slow down the site.

Best for: Team inbox, live chat, multi-channel customer communication.

Replaces: Salesforce Starter ($25/user/month), Pipedrive ($14/user/month)
Savings: $168–$300/year per user

Full CRM with AI contact scoring, email tracking, pipeline, and meeting scheduling. The free tier is more limited than it used to be: accounts opened after September 2024 cap at 1,000 contacts and 2 users (older accounts were grandfathered at 1M contacts and unlimited users). For a solo founder or a two-person team that’s still plenty. Feed it leads from Google Maps scraping and you have a complete free lead-gen pipeline.

Best for: Contacts, sales pipeline, email tracking, meetings.

24. Tally (Free)

Replaces: Typeform ($25/month), JotForm ($34/month)
Savings: $300–$408/year

Replaces: Airtable ($20/user/month) for many use cases

30. Metabase (Free, open source)

Replaces: Tableau ($70/user/month), Looker (custom pricing)
Savings: $840+/year per user

Self-hosted BI with a visual query builder for non-technical users. Connects to any database. Community edition is genuinely full-featured — dashboards, alerts, embedding, scheduled reports.

Best for: BI dashboards, database exploration, team analytics.

31. Apache Superset (Free, open source)

Replaces: Tableau, Power BI for data teams
Savings: $840+/year per user

Enterprise-grade visualization with 40+ chart types and a SQL IDE. More technical setup than Metabase, but the capability is equivalent to $70+/user/month tools.

Best for: Data cleaning, statistical analysis, automated reporting.

Automation and Integration

33. Make (Free tier — 1,000 operations/month)

Replaces: Zapier (Starter, $19.99/mo annual / $29.99 monthly) for basic automations
Savings: ~$240–$360/year

Visual workflow builder. Lead fills your form → CRM → welcome email → Slack notification → task in PM, all auto. 1,000 operations is plenty for a small business.

Best for: App integrations, workflow automation, multi-step flows.

34. n8n (Free, self-hosted)

Replaces: Zapier (Starter to Professional, $19.99–$73.50/mo annual), Make paid tier
Savings: ~$240–$880/year

The most powerful free automation tool if you can self-host. Unlimited workflows, unlimited executions, AI nodes for LLM integration. When I want a cron job that hits a scraper and writes results somewhere, n8n on a $5 VPS replaces a paid Zapier plan and never hits an operation cap.

Best for: Complex automations, AI-integrated workflows, unlimited usage.

35. Pipedream (Free tier — 100 credits/day, 3 active workflows)

Replaces: Custom backend dev for integrations
Savings: Thousands in developer time

Code-optional automation popular with developers. Any API, custom code, complex flows. The free tier runs on a daily credit budget — 100 credits a day, one credit per 30 seconds of compute — and caps you at 3 active workflows, so it suits a few always-on integrations rather than a sprawl of them. Particularly strong for AI agent integrations — the SDK connects to thousands of services.

Best for: Developer automations, API integrations, custom workflows.

36. IFTTT (Free tier — 2 applets)

Replaces: Basic Zapier automations
Savings: $228/year for simple cases

The simplest automation tool. Two free automations is limited, but perfect for your two most important triggers — “new blog post → Twitter share” or “VIP email → Slack ping.”

Best for: Simple two-step automations, learning the concept.

Development and No-Code

37. GitHub Copilot (Free for open source)

Replaces: Paid coding assistants
Savings: $100–$240/year

AI pair programming. Free for verified students and open-source maintainers. Generates ~46% of code written by users and saves 3.6 hours/week on average even on the free tier.

Best for: Code completion, function generation, learning frameworks.

38. Replit (Free tier)

Replaces: Local dev environment setup + hosting
Savings: Hours of setup + hosting costs

Browser IDE with AI code generation. Describe what you want, the AI writes it. Unlimited public projects and basic hosting on the free tier.

Best for: Quick prototypes, learning to code, simple web apps.

39. Vercel (Free tier) / Cloudflare Pages

Replaces: Basic web hosting ($5–$20/month)
Savings: $60–$240/year

Zero-config deploys, 100GB bandwidth, serverless functions, automatic HTTPS. One caveat that matters for a business article: Vercel’s free Hobby plan is non-commercial personal use only — any site that earns money, runs ads, or processes payments needs Pro ($20/month) per Vercel’s own terms. Cloudflare Pages has no such restriction, which is why I host godberrystudios.com there — also $0, also auto-deploy from git, and commercial use is fine. For anything tied to revenue, reach for Cloudflare Pages first.

Best for: Site hosting, web app deployment, static sites.

40. Supabase (Free tier)

Replaces: Firebase ($25+/month), custom backend dev
Savings: $300+/year + thousands in dev time

Open-source backend with DB, auth, real-time, and storage. 500MB database, 1GB file storage, 50,000 MAU on the free tier. Full apps without backend dev.

Best for: App backends, auth, database management, APIs.

AI-Specific Tools

41. Hugging Face (Free)

Replaces: Custom AI model hosting
Savings: Variable, potentially thousands

Thousands of pre-trained models for free. Text classification, summarization, translation, image recognition. The community has shared models for almost every AI task imaginable.

Best for: AI experimentation, NLP, image recognition, specialized tasks.

42. LM Studio (Free)

Replaces: OpenAI API costs for private/local AI
Savings: $20–$100+/month

Run AI models locally. No data leaves your machine — fits sensitive business data, GDPR, or just avoiding API costs. Supports Llama, Mistral, and hundreds of open-source models.

Best for: Private AI, GDPR, offline use, cost savings.

43. Ollama (Free)

Replaces: Cloud AI API costs
Savings: $20–$100+/month

Local LLMs in a single command. ollama run llama3.3 and you have a capable assistant running on your hardware. No keys, no limits, no data sharing. Even simpler than LM Studio.

Best for: Local AI development, API-free use, privacy-sensitive apps.

44. LangChain (Free, open source)

Replaces: Custom AI app development
Savings: Hundreds of hours

Best for: AI chatbots, connecting AI to your data, custom AI apps.

Collaboration and Communication

45. Loom (Free tier — 25 videos)

Replaces: Zoom meetings for async communication
Savings: Hours per week

Record quick video messages instead of scheduling meetings. AI auto-generates transcripts, summaries, and chapters. A 30-minute meeting becomes a 5-minute Loom people watch at 2x.

Best for: Async comms, bug reports, tutorials, status updates.

46. Slack (Free tier)

Replaces: Microsoft Teams (partially), email chains
Savings: Productivity gains from reduced email

90 days of history and 10 integrations on the free tier. Slack’s AI features (limited on free) summarize threads, suggest replies, and surface relevant past discussions.

Replaces: Lucidchart ($8/month), Whimsical ($10/month)
Savings: $96–$120/year

Infinite whiteboard with auto-clustering, smart diagramming, and AI-generated sticky notes from text. Three free boards is enough for most small teams.

Best for: Brainstorming, wireframing, process mapping, visual collab.

The Total Savings

Replace every paid tool on this list with its free alternative and the annual saving lands well over $10,000 — roughly $1,000 a month. I’m deliberately not publishing a to-the-dollar total: SaaS pricing moves constantly (HubSpot’s free tier alone was rewritten in 2024, Ahrefs and Semrush both raised prices, Drift no longer publishes a public rate), and a precise figure would be stale within weeks.

The rough shape, by category:

Category Annual Savings (approx.)
Writing & content ~$1,400
Design & visual ~$1,200
Video & audio ~$900
SEO & marketing ~$3,000
Customer communication ~$900
Project management ~$550
Data & analytics ~$1,800
Automation ~$1,000
Development ~$500
AI tools ~$480
Collaboration ~$200
Total well over $10,000/year

Every figure is a May 2026 snapshot. The point isn’t the exact number — it’s that the gap between “free” and “paid” is now four figures a month, and closing.

The Honest Caveats

Free tiers have limits. You’ll need to upgrade when you hit usage caps consistently, when your team grows past the seat allowance, when a missing integration costs more in time than the subscription would in money, or when you have compliance requirements (SOC 2, HIPAA, enterprise SSO) that free tiers don’t carry.

Some free tools also monetize through data. Check privacy policies, especially for anything handling customer records. For sensitive work, self-hosted open-source (n8n, Metabase, Supabase) or local AI (LM Studio, Ollama) gives you full control — that’s the path I default to for anything that touches scraping output or customer email.

A Starter Stack for $0

Roughly the shape of mine — adjust to taste:

Content creation: Claude (free) + ChatGPT (free) + Canva (free)
Hosting: Cloudflare Pages (free — and unlike Vercel’s Hobby plan, commercial use is allowed)
Customer support: Tidio or Crisp (free)
CRM: HubSpot (free — 1,000 contacts / 2 users on the post-2024 free tier, fine for a solo founder)
Analytics: Google Analytics 4 + Google Search Console (free)
Automation: n8n self-hosted (free) or Make (free)
Project management: Notion (free)
Scheduling: Calendly (free)

A stack roughly equivalent to $500+/month of paid software, run for the cost of a domain.

Two years ago most of these free tiers either didn’t exist or were too thin to bet on. That’s no longer true. If you’re paying for something on this list, an hour of testing the free alternative is the highest-hourly-rate work on your week.

The other thing worth saying: free tools aren’t the moat — what you build with them is. Picking the right free stack saves you five figures a year, but the actual leverage is what you ship with the time you bought back. If that’s the next question, the turn these free tools into actual revenue guide is where I’d send you.
